Wheezles and sneezles

Sneezles by A.A. Milne
Christopher Robin
Had wheezles
And sneezles,
They bundled him
Into
His bed.
They gave him what goes
With a cold in the nose,
And some more for a cold
In the head.
They wondered
If wheezles
Could turn
Into measles,
If sneezles
Would turn
Into mumps;
They examined his chest
For a rash,
And the rest
Of his body for swellings and lumps.
They sent for some doctors
In sneezles
And wheezles
To tell them what ought
To be done.
All sorts and conditions
Of famous physicians
Came hurrying round
At a run.
They all made a note
Of the state of his throat,
They asked if he suffered from thirst;
They asked if the sneezles
Came after the wheezles,
Or if the first sneezle
Came first.
They said, "If you teazle
A sneezle
Or wheezle,
A measle
May easily grow.
But humour or pleazle
The wheezle
Or sneezle,
The measle
Will certainly go."
They expounded the reazles
For sneezles
And wheezles,
The manner of measles
When new.
They said "If he freezles
In draughts and in breezles,
Then PHTHEEZLES
May even ensue."Christopher Robin
Got up in the morning,
The sneezles had vanished away.
And the look in his eye
Seemed to say to the sky,
"Now, how to amuse them to-day?"
This New Year’s Day I rang in accompanied by Vicks Vapor Rub and a bottle of Advil. As the rain came pouring down during the night so did my sniffles. I am wondering at which stage of the travels did I manage to catch this bug. Or perhaps it is just my body’s way of saying, "slow down, kid." In any event here I am blogging and sniffling, sneezing and wheezing, coughing and spluttering even as I type these words. Hold on … I reach for yet another tissue.
The best thing for it after my umpteenth cup of Tazo Chai is to probably take in a movie. I’ve seen The Holiday, Infamous, For Your Consideration, Babel, The Queen, Dream Girls, Volver, and Casino Royale. Looks like I might try The Good Shepherd … because tomorrow it is back to work for me: courses to prepare, chapters to write, and treadmills to tread.

Thanks, MB. I am, indeed, feeling better. I also adore Milne. The one book I have is so old it is literally falling apart: “Now We Are Six.”
I hope by now you are at least beginning to feel better! My childhood was saturated with Milne and I still adore his work.
Oh dear, Jean. I hope you feel well soon. Although there is something sweet in knowing you and I are in *this* together. Smiles.
Natalie,
Thanks for the good wishes. Happy New Year!
Yeah, yuk, I am sniffling and sweating too. Happy (sniff) New Year!
tamar, may all those miserable symptoms vanish as suddenly as they came and may your new year be a good year, in every possible way.
em,
Thanks for that terrific story about Vicks on the feet! Wonderful! I feel better already.
How warming and consoling it is to receive good wishes from Paris Parfait and Brenda.
Thanks – much appreciated.
Happy New Year’s, Tamarika! Many blessings in the year ahead…
And get better soon!
*hugs, love Brenda xo
Sorry you’re feeling poorly! I’m just getting over my bout with the flu, which hit Christmas day. Sigh. Better days ahead. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thanks for that lovely poem. That’s making lemonade out of lemons! My grandparents (and so, I as well) swear by Vicks. Grandma always said we should “Vicks up our feet and then put socks on”. I don’t think it does anything effective, but it makes me smile so I do it sometimes. At the very least when I hear sneezles I yell out, “We’ll Vicks up your feet for you!” (smile) That usually gets the germs far away from me.
I’m glad to hear you are on the mend.
Joyce, LOL! In the end, though I didn’t make it to any movie. Just crawled into bed instead!
Mary, Thanks for leaving out the “God” in blessing me although I am never offended with the word there. Vicks is doing wonders. Hopefully tomorrow I will be one strong, healthy gal! Get thee to a movie, any movie!
Having seen “The Good Shepherd” yesterday, I wonder if it will hit the spot for someone who isn’t feeling well. Interesting, but a little bit of a downer, I thought, and confusing! What about “Pursuit of Happyness?”
Tamarika – sending you a bagful of New Year’s “bless you’s” for all your sneezes. (Notice I left off the “God.” π ) I envy your movie-going. That’s one thing I miss here in NYC. Movies are so expensive that I may as well add a few bucks and hit a Broadway show (which is what I usually do). Sigh. I’d love to see any of the films you’ve seen so far. Enjoy! And here’s hoping the Vick’s and Advil work their magic for you.
